The Clipper Round the World Yacht Race has begun the search for ten British companies to support a British entry, backed by the GREAT Britain government enterprise, in the 2013/14 event.
Global Trade Wind Partnershipswas launched during a reception at 10 Downing Street in London on Wednesday, an event attended by Clipper founders Sir Robin Knox-Johnston and William Ward and representatives from some of the UK’s leading firms.
GREAT Britain is an international marketing and promotional campaign aimed at attracting tourism and business to Great Britain. The UK£37 million enterprise, backed by the British Treasury, has run throughout 2012, complementing the London Olympic Games.
Clipper and GREAT Britain said they were looking for 10 partners to invest UK£125,000 each to become part of the GREAT Britain-branded entry in the year-long round-the-world race, which takes members of the public and trains them to sail. Knox-Johnston, the first man to sail single-handed around the world, urged UK business to “take the opportunity” in the same way as crews for the race have. As well as allowing members of the public to sail around the world, the Clipper race has become known for its focus on business and networking opportunities at stopover points along the route. The race has been backed by a variety of enterprises, including governments, tourism boards and corporate entities since it was first run in 2000.
