Adidas goes on board with Adidas Sailing

One of the biggest names in sports apparel is entering the sailing clothing market. ADIDAS has presented it’s first collection at METS in Amsterdam. ADIDAS sailing clothing will be produced and distributed by licensee terrathree GmbH, based in Luneburg Germany, but the Adidas DNA will run through the product development and marketing of the clothing products. The entry of Adidas into sailing will inevitably be compared to a similar move by Puma several years ago, but the approach of the two iconic sporting brands is actually very different. YachRacing.biz Puma did shake up the market, at least on the sponsorship and marketing side of things. One thing that the arrival of Adidas sailing clothing might bring is a renewed look at innovation in the category. Adidas sailing say that:

The initial range has been developed with a fresh look at the sport and at sailors’ needs. The high design standards and production quality of the new range remains true to adidas’ motto: only the best for the athlete.”

Anke Fochler, terrathree’s product and marketing MD, commented at METS:

It’s fantastic to be part of the adidas family – we’re aiming very high, and want to lead the industry. We’re very confident in what we bring to the market and judging by the response we’ve seen in the build up to METS, from distributors, retailers and sailors alike, we know that we’re on to something special. Our focus on innovation and technology is already paying off.

terrathree’s distribution MD, Thomas Fochler, believes that state-of-the-art technology combined with innovative design is the key to success, and that sailors will be quick to recognise the range’s excellence:

“We’ve been designing and fine-tuning the range for almost two years now and have sourced materials carefully so that no detail was left to chance. We are committed to being totally performance oriented and this comes through in every product in the collection. We are very grateful for the technical input from top sailing professionals such as three-time Olympic Champion and two-time America’s Cup winner, Jochen Schuemann, and we will continue to listen carefully to the needs and requirements of those operating at the cutting edge of the sport.”

The collection which includes offshore garments powered by GORE-TEX® through to rash guards and shoes is scheduled to be available in stores in March 2013
